Blog Post: Reconfiguring the Flow UI in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011

Our team recently took on a client that had several Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 online deployments. Due to this particular client’s complex business model and wide range of verticals, segregation has been required on every level of the project. When we were contacted to setup another Dynamics CRM deployment on their behalf, the fairly self-sufficient client told us that he failed to move a Dynamics CRM Solution from an earlier deployment to the newest deployment. Once I got in their CRM system and started digging around, I discovered why he believed the solution import had failed.

In the time between the client’s last deployment and the new deployment, Microsoft had dropped the December 2012 (UR12) release. This release included a new feature called the Flow User Interface, which affects the user interface for accounts, contacts, opportunities, leads and cases. There is quite a significant difference between the Flow UI and the Classic UI, and the Flow UI is defaulted. This is where our client got turned around. Upon seeing the new UI, the client assumed the import of the solution had somehow gone south.

For this client organization it was extremely important to have identical UI’s for their front line users, so we reconfigured CRM to use the classic UI. Thinking that this situation may come up with other CRM partners and clients, I thought I should share some very simple steps to set the UI back to the Classic Interface.

How to Reconfigure the Dynamics CRM User Interface:

1. Start Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 by logging in as someone with administrator privileges Security Role adjustments to drop the Flow UI in CRM 2011

2. On the lower left side navigation pane, choose Settings

3. On the Settings tree, choose Customization

4. On the Customization page, choose Customize the System

5. On the Information tree, choose Entities

6. Choose the Account entity

7. Choose the form

8. You will see three forms to choose from – check the form with the name of the entity (in this case: Account)

9. Click Assign Security Roles

10. Select the radio button that indicates Display to only these selected security roles

11. Uncheck all security rolls

12. Uncheck Enabled for Fallback

13. Apply the reverse setting for the account form named Information

Apply these steps to the remaining forms affected by Microsoft’s UR12. To find out more about this blog post or C5 Insight, please fill out our Contact form.
