Gartner Research released their annual analysis of sales force automation (SFA) solutions this month, revealing both Microsoft Dynamics CRM on-premise and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online holding spots in the “Leaders” area of their Magic Quadrant.
For this analysis, Gartner ranks products based on their completeness of vision and their ability to execute on that vision in creating applications that support the automation of sales activities, processes, and administrative responsibilities by providing account, contact, and opportunity management capabilities and improve the effectiveness of salespeople.
Gartner cited the following strengths of Microsoft Dynamics CRM on-premise that helped it earn its leadership position (and keep it over several years!):
- Integration with the Microsoft technology stack allows customers to make the most of previous technology investments.
- A familiar and friendly user interface
- A broad network of partners who deliver the solution through implementation services, add-on functionality, and industry expertise
Since Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online carries all of the same benefits as the on-premise solution, Gartner added that the CRM Online per-user, per-month price remains at the mid to lower end for SFA SaaS offerings.
Because Microsoft is releasing updates to CRM Online twice a year (unlike the annual on-premise updates), the functionality of the two deployment offerings is better aligned, which helped bring CRM Online into the “leaders” quadrant from the visionaries category where it had been previously ranked.
The one thing that is unclear is why Gartner considers on-premise and Online to be separate products for Dynamics CRM, when they are in-fact simply different deployment options for the same solution. However, when you take Gartner’s analysis as-is, it is still quite clear that Microsoft Dynamics CRM is an excellent tool for automating sales processes and activities.
