Hi,

I have tried creating self-relationship with Contact and import some records with random reference and it worked as expected.  

Only point to remember is your self-relations lookup should contain value that would be the Full Name after import i.e. either “First Name + (space) + Last Name” or “Last Name + (space) + First Name” depending on the System Settings -> General Tab -> Set the full-name format.

Below is the data i tried importing. Parent Contact is custom self-relationship

First Name, Last Name, Parent Contact
"Gopal","Kanojiya","Ganesh Kumar"
"Rajesh","Sharma","Gopal Kanojiya"
"Ganesh","Kumar",""
